Abstract
The knowledge of surface roughness profiles or roughness parameters are necessary for a great variety of industrial production processes. In most cases at this time a in-process measurement is not possible due to different boundary conditions given by these processes. It is very clear that the classic mechanical method does not allow in-line measurements. Therefore optical methods were investigated by a large couple of R&D groups. The state of the art is that some optical roughness measurement systems you can buy commercially. But there is a general disadvantage of these systems because they do not cover all the possible applications as well as necessary. In our paper will give first a short overview on the field of optical roughness measurement methods. Second we will introduce you into a special application, the in-process measurement of cold rolled steel. Third we will explain the basic principles and limitations of our new method and we will show you the results of our first industrial field tests.
