The rapid growth of the market for Light Detection and Ranging (lidar) instruments is being driven by applications that include autonomous vehicle perception and navigation, as well as other novel applications such as monitoring insects flying in fields and fish spawning in lakes. Each of these applications comes with unique constraints that lead to very different optical, electronic, and software subsystems. This means that it is not possible to simply build one lidar and use it for all applications. This talk will discuss some of the primary design constraints for these novel lidar applications. Example photographs and design sketches will be shown and explained.
