Abstract
Primary liver cancers and liver metastases are malignancies resulting in high mortality rates [1, 2]. As a treatment method, microwave ablation (MWA) presents with treatment success similar to surgical resection while significantly reducing morbidity and mortality for patients, requiring ablative margins of 0.5 – 1.0 cm verified using medical imaging. Unfortunately, traditional imaging modalities used namely, contrast enhanced computed tomography and B-mode ultrasound have limitations in providing visualization for validating MWA efficacy. Alternatively, electrode displacement elastography (EDE) has shown potential in visualizing MWA post ablation regions. However, EDE has not been used previously for comparing the pre and post ablation cross-sectional area measurements for ablative margin estimation and treatment of liver cancers. This work shows that EDE can achieve ablative margin estimation by comparing pre- and post- ablation EDE strain imaging for use in determining MWA efficacy.
