Millions of people have visual impairments that cannot be corrected by conventional eyeglasses. Can emerging augmented reality technology eventually be used to create “smart eyeglasses” that digitally enhance visual information for people with impaired vision? I will present work in which we use existing augmented reality systems to design visual enhancements aimed at assisting with key visual functions, such as recognizing objects and navigating buildings, and assess these enhancements using perceptual and behavioral studies.
