Abstract
While shoelace knots bring convenience to daily life, their random and untimely loosening also causes lots of trouble. This research paper examines the mechanism of shoelace knot untying, as well as the effects of various parameters on this process. We first completed a preliminary theoretical analysis of the shoelace’s oscillation and the forces involved in shoelace knot loosening. After that, we conducted repeated experiments with a homemade setup by recording the time required to loosen a shoelace knot under eleven different parameters. Through theoretical modeling, we proposed reasonable explanations for the experimental results. Finally, the paper provides suggestions for improving the stability of the shoelace knot structure by selecting the appropriate shoelaces and noticing the details in the knotting process.
