Abstract
A recent flurry of research activity has defined an Integrated Internet Services (IIS) model, in which traditional best-effort datagram delivery can co-exit with additional enhanced QoS delivery classes. Such a service model can be used efficiently only it is combined with a usage-based and QoS-sensitive pricing scheme. The traffic flow measurement architecture (RTFM) provides a tool for measuring Internet's traffic flow. Nevertheless, the current Internet still lacks an accounting infrastructure capable of supporting sophisticated pricing schemes. This paper presents the design and the implementation of a traffic accounting mechanism for IIS. The implementation is based on the RTFM framework and has two main components: meters, that are dedicated host attached to a network segment and measuring traffic flowing on that segment, and managers, which retrieve information from the meter.
