Abstract
An effective method to accurately calculate sidelobe intensity for phase-shifting apodizers of three or more portion is presented. With this method, complete optimization can be performed in order to seek the optimal parameters of the apodizer. Optimization results show that it is not always the case that we should apply as more phase zones as possible due to the great loss of central peak intensity ratio. The reason why central peak intensity ratio drops greatly with increasing number of phase portions is also explained.
