The best place to start is to look closely at a digital image on a computer display. If you look at a black-and-white computer display through a magnifying glass, you can see that the image is made up of tiny dots called picture elements or pixels. Each pixel is a cluster of three dots (red, green, and blue) if you look at a color computer display. When you back away from the image, the individual pixels vanish because your vision blends the neighboring pixels together to form the image that you see.
