We develop a novel processing technique to fabricate a 3-D photonic bandgap material by filling the voids between the microspheres of a polystyrene colloidal crystal with silver. The transmission and reflection spectra of the composite crystal show an enlargement of the band- gap situated at a/? = 0.63 and the apparition of a second one, not predicted by the plane waves method, at a/? = 1.20 due to the increase of the dielectric contrast in the novel crystal in comparison with the pure colloidal polystyrene crystal. We also observe a shift of the first peak to the higher frequencies because of the decrease of the average refractive index in the composite crystal.
