1 August 2013 Modification to a single Gauss simulation of a phosphor coated light-emitting diode

Abstract
When designing a light-emitting diode (LED), to avoid the material and time cost in packaging and testing, a Gauss function is usually used to simulate its performance. However, for YAG:Ce phosphor coated LEDs (PC-LEDs), such a simulation is often inaccurate. The Gauss-simulated spectra are compared to spectra measured from respective LEDs, and the method of moving the YAG:Ce peak to the right in Gauss simulation is proposed. The amount depends on the kind of YAG:Ce phospher and the kind of blue light. Then PC-LEDs are designed using the modified Gauss simulation under specific performance requirements, and the packaged LEDs have performance that is acceptable for these requirements. Designing with modified Gauss simulation is particularly effective for pure white LEDs.
