The first part of the course examines characteristics of the key components and technologies needed to enable sophisticated modern optical fiber telecommunication links and networks. This includes optical fiber types, optical sources, external modulators, optical amplifiers, wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technologies, and wavelength add/drop methodologies. The second part of the course addresses system performance issues such as dispersion and nonlinear effects, network architectures, measurements equipment and procedures needed to verify the operational characteristics of systems, and modeling tools for designing, analyzing, and evaluating components, links, and networks.
