Course Instructor
SC594: Integrated Optics and Its Applications
This course provides attendees with a working knowledge of integrated optics and an understanding of its applications in a variety of fields. The course covers integrated optics theory, and it includes a comprehensive comparative review of integrated optic materials (glass, semiconductors, polymers, etc.), technologies (for generation, harnessing, amplification, and detection of light signals), devices and subsystems. Theoretical fundamentals, analytical models, closed form formulations, as well as intuitive descriptions, illustrative examples, and practical ‘tools of the trade’ will be presented throughout the course. The course also includes a discussion of the pros and cons of integrated optics compared with discrete optics, and it presents a realistic industry roadmap for optical integration and its use in communication systems, computers, data storage devices, displays, medical equipment, biological tools, sensors and test/measurement instrumentation.
