Profile Summary

Dr. Mahmoud Abdelhamid is a postdoctoral scholar in the field of sustainable energy and sustainable transportation technologies at the University of California’s Advanced Solar Technologies Institute (UC Solar), a multi-campus research institute based in Merced, California.

His research interests include transportation energy technologies and alternative fuels, renewable energy technologies, and economic and environmental impact analysis of energy storage. Mahmoud’s current work, which is sponsored by US Department of Energy (DOE)- the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E), explores integrating hybrid concentrated solar power (CSP) technologies with energy storage to the grid. He also serve as Drawdown Research fellow in the field of Utility-Scale Energy Storage and Concentrated Solar power.

Mahmoud has been engaged in several research, development, and demonstration projects funded by top automotive OEMs (General Motors, BMW, Toyota Motor), the US DOE, and the Australian Energy Agency. He has also served as a BMW Fellow in the South Carolina plant, and as a Technical Specialist for technology evaluation and development at companies such as Airbus Group.

Mahmoud is an active member of SAE, IEEE, and ASME, and has authored and presented more than 40 industry presentations, journal papers, conference proceedings, and invited talks. He earned his PhD in Automotive Engineering from Clemson University, for which he received the outstanding PhD student award through the Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research. His doctoral research focused on developing assessment methodology for using solar photovoltaic technologies on-board with alternative fuel vehicles from the life cycle assessment perspective. Mahmoud received his MS in Mechanical Engineering from Clemson University, and his BSc in Electrical and Computer Engineering in Jordan prior to coming to the US.
