Abstract
There have been considerations for the development of some substantial optical telescope facilities within the United Arab Emirates (UAE) since some time. In early 2016 a project to identify two promising locations and collect on-site measurements at those locations for at least one annual cycle. These two locations were chosen primarily for their altitude and overall availability. During the second half of 2016 weather stations were deployed on both sites. One site was selected as reference site and here also some additional systems were deployed, however, not covering an annual cycle. In this paper these very preliminary measurements are being presented, and the conditions - primarily meteorological - in the Eastern mountainous region of the UAE is discussed.
