Modern surveillance systems frequently include imaging equipment operating in more than one waveband. Setting requirements for new systems requires an understanding of the performance of individual sensors, the differences between them and how they can be used to complement each other to improve overall system performance. Whilst it remains useful to assess sensor performance with quantified metrics using reference targets it is also important to understand the subjective aspects of recognition and identification by human observers. This requires imagery from sensors to assess, when sensors or relevant target sets are not available synthetic scene generation can be used to fill in the gaps.
