Abstract
Mounting large optical components is a complex process specially because it has to ensure an easy adjustment, a high mechanical stability and this without creating any stress and deformation of the optical surface. The paper describes the mounting system developed for the optical components of the first large spectrograph installed on the (newly built) 3.6 meter telescope at La Silla In 1980. The mounting principle based directly on the law of the isostatism has been subsequently improved for the instruments of the ESO NTT and VLT telescopes. of 250 words or less.
