Cryogenics instruments need vacuum for various obvious reasons. The first of them is purely thermal, the thermal conductance in a gas is directly dependent on the residual pressure. The lower the pressure, the lower the number of free molecules and then the lower the thermal conductance. In addition a vacuum is required in order contamination of the sensitive surfaces. Unfortunately after an evacuation phase the pressure rises rapidly due to the outgassing of the surfaces. After presenting a few ways to reduce this un-avoidable outgassing we discuss the implementation of sorption pumps inside the cryostat. This paper provides some recommendations about the location, the temperature and about the use of sorption pumps depending on the operating temperature of the cryostat.
