Abstract
In fast MR imaging with a steady-state free precession (SSFP) pulse sequence the coherent signal that forms just before each rf pulse depends entirely on echoes from previous pulses. When moderate strength field gradient pulses are applied, this signal is very sensitive to random motions such as diffusion. A theoretical analysis of the full effects of diffusion in SSFP imaging is in good agreement with preliminary experimental results in a water phantom, but a previously used approximation does not adequately account for the qualitative or quantitative features of these effects.
