Abstract
In-situ water quality detection technology based on UV-VIS absorption spectroscopy has advantages of multi-parameter measurement, no reagent, short measurement interval and low cost. It is appropriate for real-time online monitoring of water bodies. However, the conventional benchtop UV-VIS spectrophotometer is unsuitable for in-situ water quality detection for its large size and extreme performance. In this article, specifications of the optical system are analyzed according to the requirements of water quality detection. A compact optical system for spectrophotometer is designed with a wavelength range of 190~750 nm, and it is composed of a Xenon flash lamp and a miniature spectrometer. Two tilted spherical mirrors are used to collimate the light beam from Xenon flash lamp and focus the light into the optical fiber. The coupling efficiency of the optical fiber is greater than 90%. The miniature spectrometer, which uses a transmission grating as the dispersive element, separates the wavelength content onto a cost-effective CMOS linear image sensor. Higher throughput is achieved by optimizing the structure of transmission grating. The optimized diffraction efficiency is above 25% in the wavelength range, which is higher than the commonly used reflective grating. The spectral resolution of the transmission grating based spectrometer is 2.2 nm, and its dimension is 95 𝑚𝑚 × 75 𝑚𝑚 × 65 𝑚𝑚. The optical system is designed with good sensitivity and compact size, which can fulfil the requirements of water quality detection.
