Abstract
Recently, reduction gearbox is a kind of general components which is widely used in marine engineering equipment, and generally under the premise of enough carrying capacity and scheduled life, reliability is the main aim of its design and manufacture. However, the higher reliability always brings the higher mass and cost for the manufacturer, which brings a contradiction between reliability and cost of the gearbox. So it is of great significance to find a balance between reliability and mass of the gearbox to realize the best cost performance. In this paper, an optimization model of a parallel shafts gearbox is built, whose optimization objectives are both mass and reliability. By adjusting the weighting factors of each objective function, a relation curve between the least mass and the highest reliability was obtained. And finally the economy and reliability of the gearbox can be coordinated by analyzing the curve and finding the inflection point, at which a relatively maximum reliability and minimum cost can be achieved. This way may be an effective one for gearbox design that may provide guidance for similar engineering problems.
