Abstract
The Designer Fabricator Interpreter (DFI) is a knowledge-based distributed problem-solving architecture which models participants of processes as computerized agents. In the DFI system, the agents work cooperatively on a problem, each reasoning from its own specific viewpoint. The goal is to coordinate the agents’ problem-solving actions, utilizing both unique and shared agent knowledge, in a way that produces a better solution than if each agent worked alone without any knowledge of another agent. As an application, the DFI system attempts to address the lack of interaction among structural designers, fabricators and erectors in designing connections of structural members in buildings. During the connection evaluation process, agents reason from their viewpoints and propose alternative connections for consideration. This process may require agents to negotiate among themselves when they have differing views. If they cannot resolve their problems, an arbitrator agent is enlisted to help the conflicting agents reach an agreement.
