Abstract
A few unusual concentric optical configurations that are evolved from Dyson and Offner systems are presented for possible adaptation as spectrographs. CONTENT Two sufficient conditions for good unit-magnification imaging are that the optical system be concentric and retroreflecting. These conditions are satisfied by both the Dyson and the Of fner2 systems. Many years ago I speculated3 and later verified4 that the Dyson system might make a good concavegrating spectrograph. The verification required modifying the paraxial design to satisfy telecentricity. That modification considered in terms of an invariance to rocking led to recognition of the aforementioned two conditions. Furthermore the modification can be fulfilled over the entire field by including a Schmidt corrector. Thusly the Dyson and Offner systems are shown in figure 1. The Of fner version now clearly appears as a Schmidt retroreflecting telescope whose image and pupil planes have been interchanged. The rationale behind exploring these concepts is to increase the information handling capabilities of spectrographs. Fiber optic communication networks offer one application where the diffraction-limited stiginatic quality of the Dyson system could be quite useful for wavelength-division multiplexing and demultiplexing. One spectrograph would have adequate field to serve a large network. Another application would be to gain throughput for codedaperture spectroscopy5 or mock interferometry5 at low-light-levels and in the ultraviolet. However the thoroughness of the spectrographic verification for the Dyson system still leaves something to be desired. Does
