Abstract
The ways in which laser radiation can be used to illuminate particles and droplets in situ in combusting and related flow situations are reviewed, along with those photographic and video recording methods which allow images of these particles and droplets to be captured for further analysis. The experimental techniques which are employed, for instance, to remove background combustion light, and to synchronise camera shutters with laser pulses to enable rapid transient events to be adequately captured, are described. Image processing techniques to extract information such as particle/droplet sizes, velocities and concentration are also discussed. Numerous successful applications and the results from these applications are reported, for application areas such as engines, furnaces, fires and sprays, all of them of major industrial interest.
