Abstract
Detection, location, and target recognition require scanning and processing of large images and are computationally expensive. Their implementation in real time is thus quite difficult. The Zoom-lens model is suggested in this paper as a possible solution for decreasing the computational burden usually associated with automatic target recognition (ATR). The original field of view (FOV) is partitioned into overlapping regions of lower resolution whose likelihood to contain targets of interest is evaluated using prespecified attention thresholds and distributed associative memories (DAMs). The Zoom-lens system iteratively focuses its attention at ever-increasing resolution on those regions selected by the preceding preattentive stages until final recognition (or rejection) occurs. Experimental results reported herein demonstrate the feasibility of this approach.
