Abstract
The problems of nonscanning three-dimensional allround data acquisition are discussed using the concept of "sphere of vision". Based on the recently developed panoramic annular lens (PAL-optics), which abandons the "see-through-a-window" (STW) concept for data acquisition, a new signal collecting modul has been developed using the visual strategy of birds. The PAL Imaging Modul for Allround (spherical) Data Acquisition and Recording (PALIMADAR) uses two PAL-optics juxtapositioned on the same optical axis, facing each other's flat surfaces. The unique feature of PALIMADAR is that its visual field consists of three regions, in the same way as that of the birds: a binocular or stereoscopic region, an anterior visual field, and a lateral visual field. As a consequence, this modul - for the first time in imaging history - covers a spherical visual field without the need for using any scanning technique.
