Abstract
Binary ion-exchange is one of the most important method of fabricating passive integrated-optical devices. In this paper, smooth refractive-index profiles are recovered in the case of waveguides supporting a low number of modes. The role played by the residual stress fields is also investigated, and the stress contribution to the index change is quantitatively evaluated for potassium- and silver-exchanged systems.
