Abstract
This paper considers a model for the magnetic recording channel that includes both signal- dependent and signal independent noises. Detectors that use the information about the signal contained in the noise are described. Application of one such a detector to cases where the distribution of the signal-dependent noise has non zero means and is a function of previously recorded transitions is given. The paper also makes comparative evaluations of the performance of such a detector against the regular Viterbi detector.
