Abstract
This paper studies the implementation complexity of the new digital-imaging standard JPEG2000. It will be shown that the new standard has a significant higher memory complexity then JPEG. The number of memory transfers almost doubles and also the size of memory buffers is increased with a factor 40. Hence, a cost-efficient implementation of JPEG2000 is a real challenge.
