Abstract
This paper describes applications of and infrastructural technologies for telepresence capabilities within the context of the Information-Based Manufacturing Program at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The Information- Based Manufacturing Program is supported by the National Advanced Manufacturing Testbed (NAMT), which enables collaborative research among scientists and engineers at NIST, remote industry locations, and government and university laboratories. The research environment ofthe NAMT operates as a collaboratory, or a "research center without walls," using computing and networking technology to improve the performance of manufacturing research and the delivery of NIST measurement services. Telepresence is one of the critical technical capabilities upon which the operation of the NAMT collaboratory is based.
