Abstract
Three methods for describing the propagation of a paraxial field along the optical axis of a uniaxial medium are introduced. Firstly the Cartesian field components are shown to satisfy two coupled parabolic equations. From their formal solution an elegant expression connecting the field inside the crystal to the corresponding one propagating in vacuum is deduced. This expression also allows us to derive the anisotropic propagator which is the sum of an ordinary and an extraordinary contribution. Finally we derive a simple approximate expression for the field, valid for propagation distances comparable with the size of actual crystals.
