Abstract
Possible approaches to observe optical bistable behavior of SiO2 opal matrices are discussed. They include mirrorless schemes exploiting transmission oscillations at the stop-band edge or sharp structure impurity resonances and layouts with opal inside Fabry-Perot interferometer.
