17 May 2012 Utilizing information-based sensor management to reduce the power consumption of networked unattended ground sensors

Abstract
Information based sensor management principles have been applied to an ad hoc network of commercial off the shelf (COTS) unattended ground sensors (iScout®) utilized for container security in order to extend the sensor platform's operational life by minimizing power consumption. The methodology and results of a simple field demonstration will be presented. Each unattended ground sensor contains a multiplicity of heterogeneous sensors and is treated as a sensor platform. While the use of an unmodified COTS sensor platform precluded implementation of a complete information based sensor management (IBSM) system, advantage was taken of the redundant coverage of clustered sensor platforms and individual sensor platform control to extend their operational life without loss of situation awareness.
