We discuss about metallic and dielectric metamaterial for ultra-sensitive infrared spectroscopy. Experimental and theoretical studies of broadband metallic metamaterial absorber and its application for infrared spectroscopic molecules sensing are demonstrated. We made three-dimensional vertical-oriented metal-insulator-metal (v-MIM) metamaterial absorber and successfully detected 20 ppm concentration of carbon dioxide and butane molecules with negligible background noise. Besides metallic metamaterials, dielectric metamaterials have also attracted many attentions for spectrometer-less infrared absorption sensors. Owing to the lossless properties of transparent dielectric materials and its capability of confining and enhancing optical fields, it can create ultra-high Q-resonance and it enhances the molecular signals. However, due to the narrow band properties, multiple resonators array is necessary for the spectral measurements. In this talk, we would like to discuss advantage and disadvantage of metal and dielectric metamaterials for spectroscopic applications.
