Abstract
A crossed-cosine spatial filter suitable for Lyot coronagraphy is presented. With respect to other proposed designs, this filter presents the advantage of being usable for low-order wavefront sensing. Wavefront measurement accuracies were simulated numerically and found to be better than λ/10 peak-to-valley and λ/100 root mean square, which is a performance comparable to the best currently available wavefront measuring techniques. The crossed-cosine filter could be integrated into a cascaded coronagraph, either spaceborne or ground-based, of which it would constitute the first stage.
