Abstract
Continued advances in polishing, thin films coating and metrology have facilitated the routine production of optical coatings with losses in the few part per million range. Optical components and coatings with extremely low levels of loss have enabled a number of applications. A brief historical background of ion beam sputtering, substrate requirements, recent results as well as a brief discussion of applications of low loss IBS coated optics are presented.
