Prof. Katarzyna Chalasinska-Macukow is a full professor at the Faculty of Physics, Div. of Information Optics, University of Warsaw. She earned her Ph.D. in Physics (optics) at the Faculty of Physics in 1979 and a habilitation in the same field in 1988. She was nominated professor in physics at the University of Warsaw in 1997.
Since 2005 she is Rector of University of Warsaw. Before her appointment as the Rector she was vice-Rector fo Finance and Personnel (2002-2005) and Dean of the Faculty of Physics (1996-2002). In 2008 she was elected as President of the Conference of Rectors of Academic Schools of Poland (CRASP).
In years 1982-1983 she was asistant professor at the Laboratoire de Recherches an Optique et Lasers, Dept. de Physique, Universite Laval, Quebec, Canada. She made several stays as a senior researcher at the Laboratoire de Physique Generale et Optique, Universite Franche-Comte, Besancon, France (1991-1995) and as an invited professor at the Department od Optics, Autonomous University of Barcelona (1991-2003). In 2009 she was awarded an honorary doctorate for her research in the field of information processing and for her valuable collaboration by the UAB.
She was Vice-President of International Commission for Optics (1993-1999), member of OSA, EOS and Polish Physical Society.

The discrimination capability requirements of pattern recognition systems may vary depending on the application and the characteristics of the objects to analyse. Our goal is to obtain a single system with a wide and smooth control of its discrimination capability in two senses: the first one, a discrimination capability selective to different aspects of the target (for example, shape, intensity, colour, texture); the second one, a discrimination capability with variable level of sensitivity -or tolerance- to the differences between an object and the target in the aspect selected. This purpose lead us to consider higher levels of complexity in the sensitivity of the recognition system. Thus, we obtain pattern recognition with high discrimination capability for a given aspect along with certain tolerance for another aspect, or vice versa. In this work, we build an optoelectronic system for pattern recognition with selective and adjustable discrimination capability by applying a dual nonlinear correlation model to a joint transform correlator. Dual nonlinear correlation is achieved by means of two nonlinear operators that are applied to both the reference and input channels. A filtering function that limits the region of support in the Fourier plane is additionally introduced. The eventual capabilities of the real system strongly depend on some experimental conditions such as quantization, grey-level dynamic range, saturation and other technical characteristics of both the camera and the spatial light modulator used in the joint transform correlator. We explore these capabilities for a 8-bits and a 12-bits CCD camera and several available modulators. Experimental and simulated results for model and real objects - alphabetic characters, keys and screws- are presented and discussed. They demonstrate that the discrimination capability of the optical recognition system by dual nonlinear correlation can be controlled and adjusted with gradable tolerance to object variations in a given aspect.

Many problems related to optical pattern recognition nay be reduced to the detection and localization of search target. Various modifications of classical matched filte9 such as phase-only filters (POF) binary hase-only filters (Bi-POF) , and complex ternary matched filters (CTMF) providing the output peak sharpness minimalizaton are recently suggested in order to improve the detection quality. Among various matched filtering modifications leading5 to output peak sharpness minimalzation the inverse filtering (IF) , pure phase—only correlation (POC) , hard clipping nonlinear joint transform correlator (NJTC) and8 in some approximation , the optimum filter (OF) proposed by Jaroslawski provide the maximum sharp output signal (which is the diffraction limited delta function) . All procedures introduced to improve the detection quality have high pass characteristics and the high spatial frequencies are enhanced. Most of mentioned above methods (exept POC and NJTC) introduce only modification of the filter function keeping nonchanged spectrum of the input scene. The pure phase—only correlation method belongs to the class of nonlinear matched filtering such that both the filter transfer function and the input scene spectrum are modifed nonlinearly before they are multiplied in the spectral domn9 .Symmetric phase-only filter (SPOF) analyzed by Ersoy et all.9' as an example of the nonlinear matched filtering corresponds exactly to the POC method. Optical implementation of the POC method can be realized on the basis of the nonlinear joint transform correlator7. In this paper analysis of the properties of the phase-only correlation method applied p he multiobject input scenes is presented. Our initial results 1, obtained by digital simulation show that also in this case the method works well, but is sensitive to intermodulation noises. The study of the influence of the intermodulation noises on the recognition results is the main goal of our digital analysis.

The main techniques for optical pattern recognition are based on the correlation methods. In the past few years several correlation filters related to classical matched spatial filters have been proposed1'2 and different measures of performances have been introduced3. Recent works have shown that the problem of low light efficiency of optical correlators can be avided with the help of several types of pure phase-only filters . They have also good features for recognition process such as high discrimination capability and high sharp correlation peaks. Optical realization of the phase-only5flters (POF) based on holographic recording method is very difficult ' . Using digital methods one cn easily codify and modify the filter depending on the applications. The binary encoding of the phase-only filter (or its binary version) is the best candidate for recent applications in pattern recognition. Nevertheless most of graphic devices controlled by computer such as plotter, laser printer or the majority of spatial light modulators can only modulate the amplitude. For such a reason several methods have been recenly proposed to obtain amplitude encoded phase-only filters (AEPOF) , which can be written on an amplitude modulating device. However, amplitude modulation does not provide high light efficiency of the optical correlator. The use of phase materials for spatial filters recording allows better utilization of laser light in recognition systems and keeps laser power requirements lower. One of the more popular conventional phase materials is the bleached holographic emulsion. Bleaching removes the attenuation giving more light in the output correlation plane, but also in the case of classical matched filtering distortion and increased scattering noise occur in the reconstructed avefront which degrades the recognition capability of the filter . Binary amplitude encoded computer generated holograms do not suffer from distortion after bleaching11, because in this case the distribution of the phase hologram is identical to the distribution of the amplitude hologram without bias. The reconstruction is not more disturbed than the reconstruction of the amplitude hologram. In this paper we analyze the usefulness for pattern recognition of the bleached mplitude encoded phase-only filters based on Burckhardt's method . The silver halide (sensitized) gelatine (SHSG)12 is proposed to record computer generated phase-'only filter. The SHSG provides higher signal to noise ratio (SNR) that conventionally bleached eiitulsions because of absence of scattering centers after processing.
