SAR raw data are usually oversampled and spectrally weighted along the Fourier-domain processing chain, to avoid Gibbs effects around point targets. During the range and azimuth SAR focusing operations, the use of matched filters, whose frequency responses are smoothed by means of tapering functions, such as Hamming, Taylor, or Kaiser windows, introduces a significant degree of spatial correlation of the noise in the single-look complex 2D signal at the output of the SAR processor. In this work, we make use an unsupervised procedure for the spatial decorrelation of fully-developed speckle, originally developed for improving the despeckling performance in the case of single-look SAR images [Lapini et al., 2014]. Now, the goal is evaluating the impact of a preliminary spatial decorrelation of the noise on the accuracy of temporal change detection between two single-look images of the same scene taken at different times. In a likely simulated scenario, we optionally introduce a spatial correlation of the noise in the synthetic complex data by means of a 2D separable Hamming window in the Fourier domain. Then, we remove such a correlation by using the whitening procedure, take the modulus of the SLC images, apply change detection algorithms suitable for detected data, and compare the geometric and radiometric accuracy of the estimated change maps for the three following cases: uncorrelated noise, correlated noise, and decorrelated noise. Several change detection methods are considered: from the simple Log-Ratio operator preceded by despeckling, to more advanced parametric or nonparametric methods based on the Kullback-Leibler divergence [Inglada and Mercier, 2007] or on the mean-shift clustering of the bivariate scatterplot [Aiazzi et al., 2013]. Simulation results show a consistent improvement of performance, notably the geometric accuracy of changes, but also their local extent. The benefits of noise decorrelation are noticeable in experiments carried out on true COSMO-SkyMed images.

This paper describes the most recent achievements in speckle reduction of COSMO-SkyMed (CSK ®) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. An advanced multresolution despeckling filter, based on undecimated wavelet transform (UDWT) and maximum a-posteriori (MAP) estimation has been specialized and optimized to CSK ® data, both single- and multilook. The tradeoff between performances and computational complexity has been investigated: Laplacian-Gaussian and generalized Gaussian (GG) priors for MAP estimation in UDWT domain differ by one order of magnitude in computation cost. The former are more complex but yield the best results attainable with a Bayesian estimation carried out in the UDWT domain. Pre-processing of point targets and segmentation of wavelet planes has been exploited to effectively handle the heterogeneity of the data. The effects of multilooking have been investigated. Starting from single-look complex (SLC) data, the spatial correlation coefficients (CC) of speckle and the equivalent number of looks (ENL) of all products have been theoretically calculated. It is proven that, besides having an inherently better radiometric quality, multilooked products exhibit a lower spatial correlation of speckle than single-look products, thereby better falling under the assumption of uncorrelated speckle, exploited by the majority of model-based despeckling filters, included those used in the present work. The effects of spatial resampling have been investigated as well. Unlike MAP filters in spatial domain (e.g. the Gamma-MAP filter), MAP filters in wavelet domain are little sensitive to resampling, because the fundamental hypotheses on which they rely are not violated because of resampling. Comparisons with the state of the art are also provided and shown to be more than favorable. Besides traditional supervised methods to evaluate the quality of despeckling, a novel procedure, fully automated, based on bivariate analysis of noisy and denoised image has been devised. Its results agree both with visual analysis and with manual measurements.

The problem of distortion allocation varying with wavelength in lossy compression of hyperspectral imagery is investigated. Distortion is generally measured either as maximum absolute deviation (MAD) for near-lossless methods, e.g. differential pulse code modulation (DPCM), or as mean square error (MSE) for lossy methods (e.g. spectral decorrelation followed by JPEG 2000). Also the absolute angular error, or spectral angle mapper (SAM), is used to quantify spectral distortion. A band add-on (BAO) technique was recently introduced to calculate a modified version of SAM. Spectral bands are iteratively selected in order to increase the angular separation between two pixel spectra by exploiting a mathematical decomposition of SAM. As a consequence, only a subset of the original hyperspectral bands contributes to the new distance metrics, referred to as BAO-SAM, whose operational definition guarantees its monotonicity as the number of bands increases. Two strategies of interband distortion allocation are compared: given a target average bit rate, distortion, either MAD or MSE, may be set to be constant varying with wavelength. Otherwise it may be allocated proportionally to the noise level on each band, according to the virtually-lossless protocol. Thus, a different quantization step size depending on the estimated standard deviation of the noise, is used to quantize either prediction residuals (DPCM) or wavelet coefficients (JPEG 2000) of each spectral band, thereby determining band-varying MAD/MSE values. Comparisons with the uncompressed originals show that the average spectral angle mapper (SAM) is minimized by constant distortion allocation. Conversely, the average BAO-SAM is minimized by the noise-adjusted variable spectral distortion allocation according to the virtually lossless protocol. Preliminary results of simulations performed on reflectance data obtained from compressed radiance data show that, for a given compression ratio, the virtually-lossless approach minimizes both BAO-SAM and SAM; hence, discrimination of spectrally similar materials, e.g. clays, is significantly expedited.

This paper presents two novel approaches to speckle reduction in SAR images. The former relies on the multiplicative speckle model as an MMSE filtering performed in the wavelet domain by means of an adaptive shrinkage of the detail coefficients of an undecimated decomposition. Each coefficient is shrunk by the variance ratio of the noise-free coefficient to the noisy one. All the above quantities are analytically calculated from the speckled image, the noise variance, and the wavelet filters only, without resorting to any model to describe the underlying backscatter. Estimation of the local statistics driving the filter is expedited and layered processing allows to extend adaptivity also across the spatial scale. The latter is not model-based and provides a blind estimation of the backscatter underlying the speckled image stated as a problem of matching pursuits. The local adaptive MMSE estimator is obtained as an expansion in series of a finite number of prototype estimators, fitting the spatial features of the different statistical classes encountered, e.g., edges and textures. Such estimators are calculated in a fuzzy fashion through an automatic training procedure. The space-varying coefficients of the expansion are stated as degrees of fuzzy membership of a pixel to each of the estimators. A thorough performance comparison is carried out with the Gamma-MAP filter and with the Rational Laplacian Pyramid (RLP) filter, recently introduced by three of the authors. On simulated speckled images both the proposed filters gain almost 3 dB SNR with respect to conventional local-statistics (Lee/Kuan) filtering. Experiments carried out on widespread test SAR images and on a speckled mosaic image, comprising synthetic shapes, textures, and details from true SAR images, demonstrate that the visual quality of the results is excellent in terms of both background smoothing and preservation of edge sharpness, textures, and point targets. The absence of decimation in the wavelet decomposition avoids the typical ringing impairments produced by critically-sampled wavelet-based denoising.

A variety of image compression algorithms exists for applications where reconstruction errors are tolerated. When lossless coding is mandatory, compression ratios greater than 2 or 3 are hard to obtain. DPCM techniques can be implemented in a hierarchical way, thus producing high- quality intermediate versions (tokens) of the input images at increasing spatial resolutions. Data retrieval and transmission can be achieved in a progressive fashion, either by stopping the process at the requested resolution level, or by recognizing that the image being retrieved is no longer of interest. However, progressiveness is usually realized with a certain performance penalty with respect to the reference DPCM (i.e., 4-pel optimum causal AR prediction). A generalized recursive interpolation (GRINT) algorithm is proposed and shown to be the most effective progressive technique for compression of still images. The main advantage of the novel scheme with respect to the standard hierarchical interpolation (HINT) is that interpolation is performed in a separable fashion from all error-free values, thereby reducing the variance of interpolation errors. Moreover, the introduction of a parametric half-band interpolation filter produces further benefits and allows generalized interpolation. An adaptive strategy consists of measuring image correlation both along rows and along columns and interpolating first along the direction of minimum correlation. The statistics of the different subband-like sets of interpolation errors are modeled as generalized Gaussian PDFs, and individual codebooks are fitted for variable length coding. The estimate of the shape factor of the PDF is based on a novel criterion matching the entropy of the theoretical and actual distributions. Performances are evaluated by comparing GRINT with HINT, and a variety of other multiresolution techniques. Optimum 4-pel causal DPCM and lossless JPEG are also considered for completeness of comparisons, although they are not progressive. For the examined images GRINT is always superior. Only optimum DPCM provides comparable results; GRINT is, however, progressive and yields error- free tokens at any resolution level.
