The article proposed a simple sharpness metric for perception and estimation. This block-based estimator uses both the edge-based and pixel-based methods all in the spatial domain. For each block, the estimation involves measuring the spread of edges and the comparison of the two variations of neighboring pixels in the original image and the same re-blurred image. Accounting for visual perception, these measures are then combined via a weighted geometric mean to a final value that quantifies the global sharpness of the image.
