Course Instructor
SC881: Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers – Design and Applications
This course provides attendees with a basic knowledge of semiconductor optical amplifier operating principles, design, fabrication, and applications. The course concentrates on (i) optical amplifier designs, and performance optimization (ii) applications in optical communications, optical logic and as low coherence sources. Many practical and useful examples are included throughout. The technical areas covered are materials for amplifiers, current confinement design of amplifiers, low reflectivity facet designs, noise in amplifiers, impact of amplifier noise in communication applications such as in-line amplifiers and pre-amplifier, amplified spontaneous noise accumulation in cascaded amplifier circuits, and low coherence source applications such as in biomedical applications. You will become fluent in semiconductor optical amplifier design parameters for many varied applications.
