SC378: Numerical Modeling of Micro-Photonic Devices using the FDTD Method
The Finite-Difference Time-Domain method (FDTD) is considered one of the most powerful numerical techniques for the analysis and design of electromagnetic problems. The emphasis of this course is on providing a working knowledge of FDTD and its application to micro-photonic devices. Many specific examples are provided including the analysis of micro-disk cavities, photonic band gaps, diffractive optical elements, guided mode resonant filters, subwavelength effective materials, IR detectors (including micro-bolometers and QWIPs), and VCSEL cavities. A CD with example FDTD codes is provided.
SC018: Scalar and Vector Methods for the Design of Diffractive, Mesocopic, Subwavelength, and Evanescent Optics
As fabrication methods continue to improve, diffractive optical elements that feature various sizes of illumination wavelengths are becoming available. Now, more accurate analysis and design methods must be used. In addition to a discussion of scalar design of gratings and zone plates, we survey several electromagnetic techniques for the design of mesoscopic, subwavelength, and evanescent optical elements. Wide arrays of numerical tools, suitable for periodic, aperiodic, inhomogeneous, and anisotropic elements, are discussed and design examples are presented.
